Name what has actually happened
A spinner, a stale count and an explicit failure message are different observations. Record what the interface says and the action you intended, without guessing whether every message was changed. Avoid making a second bulk request simply because the first did not look immediate. If it did partly complete, another broad action can make the outcome harder to explain and may affect a different current selection.
Check the original scope
Confirm the account, group, folder and date range from the batch note. A different view may show a different count without anything being wrong. Look through provider webmail where available and inspect an example from the intended group. Do not treat another application’s cached list as an authoritative report of the stored mailbox. Equally, do not assume a provider view proves every item was processed without examining the relevant result.
Follow an explained recovery route
Use the current provider and product guidance for a stated error. A connection problem may involve authorization or organization policy rather than a cleanup feature. Do not weaken security controls or create replacement credentials merely to remove an unexplained warning. If support is needed, provide the minimum useful description of account type, operation and visible error; avoid including private message bodies, passwords or unnecessary screenshots of correspondence.
Resume only with a clear next step
A confirmed incomplete action may justify a narrowly defined next operation after its scope is understood. An uncertain outcome does not justify repeating the same destructive request. Leave the group untouched while checking the result or obtaining support. The practical goal is a mailbox you can explain and use, not finishing a numerical target. Reduce batch size if it makes the result easier to verify in the next attempt.
