Do stars and folders protect messages from bulk cleanup?

A marker is not a universal lock

Clean Email’s guidance says its default view can include messages across folders and both starred and unstarred mail. That means a familiar organization scheme does not automatically define the boundary of a new cleanup view. Before acting, inspect whether the intended group includes material you already organized. Treat protection as a condition to verify, not a property you can infer from an icon.

Make your convention explicit

People use stars and folders differently. One person stars things to keep forever; another stars items awaiting a reply and later removes the marker. Write what your markers mean before using them as exclusions. If years of inconsistent habits have accumulated, a single marker may not reliably distinguish valuable mail. Use a smaller selection and direct review rather than treating the entire history as consistently labeled.

Test the exception without risking it

Choose a low-consequence example and inspect whether it appears in the proposed group before any action. Where the interface offers filtering or exclusions, read the current controls and confirm the result. Do not deliberately delete an important message to test a protection claim. An observation that a sample is excluded is useful, but it is not proof that every old rule and label has been respected.

Preserve a retrieval check

Keep several known wanted examples that represent your actual conventions: a starred message, a filed message and an unmarked message you still need. Find them after the bounded pilot through the provider’s interface. If the result conflicts with your expectation, stop and investigate the selection. Avoid adding layers of automatic rules until the relationship between your markers and the cleanup action is understandable.
